Does reading Shakespeare help us with our literature?

I'm not sure that it exactly expands the reader's vocabulary (though it does test yours, and you will pick up a few terms which generally have fallen out of usage), but it probably can't do much harm. Also, I think that many consider it important for a well-educated person to be familiar with Shakespeare's works.
