How do i defrost the coils on my air conditioner without getting water everywhere?

I just bought this house, and the previous owners never changed out the filter. I guess that caused a build up of frost on the coils. It started leaking so bad, it went through to the other room and now my carpet is getting soaked. I've cleaned the drain pipe from the drip pan, and replaced the filter. Someone help, please!
